Peachtree
City has spent the past several months preparing
for any Y2K-related emergencies that could come
up, and the city is now in the final stages of
informing the public on what to do should
problems arise.
The
July, November and December editions of Update,
the city's monthly newsletter, contain tips on
Y2K preparation as well as details on the city's
emergency plan, according to public information
specialist Betsy Tyler.
Emergency
information concerning Peachtree City will be
broadcast on WSB AM-750 and B-98.5 FM. Residents
are urged to have battery-powered radios on hand
with plenty of extra batteries.
All
of the city's fire stations will be manned by at
least one person at all times around New Year's
Eve and New Year's Day, even if firefighters are
sent out on a call.
If
communications fail in someone's home, residents
can go to either the Leach station (100 Paschall
Rd.), the Neely station (105 N. Peachtree
Parkway), the Satterthwaite station (451
Crabapple Lane) or the Weber station (481 S.
Peachtree Parkway) for telephone service.
A
temporary emergency shelter will be available for
Peachtree City residents with medical or other
short-term special needs requiring a controlled
climate or access to electrical power.
More
than a dozen people have already contacted the
city to inform officials that they have medical
equipment which requires electricity, Tyler said,
and anyone else who is in that situation should
also let the city know in advance.
If
a major problem occurs, a command post will be
set up at Neely fire station. Key administrative
staff members will be either on call during the
holiday weekend or at the station, Tyler said.
