Hecht offers
mentoring bill State Sen.
Greg Hecht has introduced proposed legislation to
establish statewide voluntary mentoring programs
in schools.
The
bill will establish a major emphasis on
screening, training and gaining volunteers to
mentor children having difficulties with
academics. It would provide for a program through
the governor's office to coordinate mentor
programs in all counties in the state.
Beside
screening and training volunteers, the program
would reward counties with successful programs.
Mentoring
is a tremendous program for our children,
said Hecht, who represents part of Fayette
County. Caring individuals, retired
professionals and community volunteers can impact
a child's life in such a positive way.
Often
children give up the struggle to succeed or stay
in school either as a result of tough academics
or as a result of difficulties in their
lives, he added. These children can
succeed with their parents' involvement along
with the influence of other positive role
models.
Hecht
Gov. Roy Barnes and Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor have
committed their support to the bill in the 2000
session of the Georgia General Assembly.
