Fayette County should donate Dorsey house to F'ville Main Street program

I'm saddened to hear the historic Dorsey house may be demolished to make room for a jail. It was interesting to read in the paper that architect Neel Reid had a hand in the existing design. His buildings are precious Georgia resources.

I'd like to propose, if not a solution, a jumping-off point for a discussion on how to save this piece of the past. Is there some way Fayette County can donate the structure to Fayetteville and absorb some or all of the relocation costs? And even buy or donate land for it, if it is needed?

I live in the county and don't pay city taxes, but I appreciate the work Main Street Fayetteville has put into the downtown sector in the past few years. It's a lovely showpiece for the county as a whole. When we have company I never fail to make sure we visit the area, saying with pride, “This is our downtown.” So I would be happy to have some of my tax dollars go towards the enhancement of Fayetteville. Surely I'm not alone in these thoughts?

I don't know if the logistics can be worked out, but this would be a great project to show the county can work with the city to make Fayette a better place overall. Sort of a “hands across the water” initiative. (We can give presents to Peachtree City, Tyrone, Brooks and Woolsey next Christmas. Or when a similarly good opportunity arises.)

I'm going to contact my county commissioners to say I think it's time we encouraged Fayetteville's efforts with a donation like this and I urge others to do the same. Despite our ups and downs, Fayette is the best county in the state and unified support for our different entities will only make us better.
