Post Office seeks
room to
expand in Fayetteville By DAVE HAMRICK
Staff Writer
The
U.S. Postal Service hopes to build a 22,576-sq.
ft. annex next year to relieve overcrowding at
the Fayetteville Post Office.
And
the service is seeking proposals by Jan. 15 for a
four- to five-acre site, with our without an
existing building, for the annex.
The
plan is to move carriers for the 30215 zip code
into the new facility, freeing up the existing
Post Office on Georgia Avenue for services to the
public and for the 30214 carriers, said Michael
Miles, Postal Service spokesman.
We're
looking for a site or existing space, he
said. If we find existing space, the
project could be completed a lot sooner. If we
have to start from scratch, it could take a lot
longer. If there's a building ready to go,
it's hoped the annex can open in the spring, he
said. If not, it will probably be late in the
year.
An
existing site should have a platform, loading
dock, plenty of room to maneuver trucks and
approximately 100 parking spaces, Miles said.
Postal
Service officials are most interested in the area
bordered on the north by Ga. Highway 54, on the
south by Ga. Highway 92, on the east by Jimmy
Mayfield Boulevard, and on the west by Old Norton
Road and Governors Square.
In
choosing the target area, we tried to gauge where
the growth is going, said Miles.
About
25-30 people will work at the new facility.
