Chiefs unbeaten in the pool

The swimmers of McIntosh High School continued their unbeaten streak against Fayette County by winning both the boys' and girls' competition at a recent meet at the Kedron Aquatic Center.

The boys team outscored Fayette County 129-81, while the Lady Chiefs edged the Lady Tigers 116-115.

McIntosh is under the direction of first-year head coach Sean Murphy. He was impressed with the depth of talent on both of his winning teams.

“Team points were earned by 14 of 16 boys and 16 of 18 girls,” noted Murphy.

Senior Chris Jobson set a new school record and qualified for the state championships with his 1:06.07 victory in the 100-yard breaststroke. Jobson also placed first in the 100-yard butterfly.

Sophomore George Clark took first place in the 500- and 200-yard freestyle events, while fellow sophomore Mike Powers added a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.

The team of David Briggs, Billy Whitehouse, Charlie Baran and Mike Booker placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Luke McMurray joined Jobson, Powers and Clark to win the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The girls' team was led by Becky Brokish, whose first place finishes in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles easily qualified her for the state championships. Freshman Ali Derr brought home first-place points in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The girls' 200-yard medley relay team of Becca Thome, Ali Derr, Molly MacGregor and Erin Bartels earned a state qualifying time of 2:06.87. The team of Emily Maple, Asami Maese, Erin Bartels and Becky Brokish also qualified for state with a time of 1:53.33 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Lady Chiefs came from behind in the evening's final event to clinch the team victory, with the team of Maple, Maese, Erin Bittner and Brokish taking first place and Becky Wadsworth, Kathleen powers, Stacia Lukjan and Ceara Smith earning the second- place points in the 400-freestyle relay.

The Chiefs then had to prepare to swim against their friends and neighbors as they got ready to take on the Starr's Mill swim team.
