McIntosh fares well on mat

Their itinerary was almost militaristic. The Chiefs wrestlers left school Friday afternoon, drove for close to two hours to Cartersville, wrestled at 7, left the gym at 11:30, got to their hotel at 12:45 and were wrestling again at 7:30 the next morning.

Lucky for them, they had some nice things to think about while they slept. The Chiefs won two of their three matches Friday, defeating Woodland 36-33 and Calhoun 48-27, and losing to Ringgold 38-32.

The Chiefs are improving every day, but there are still mistakes being made. “It was certainly a character builder for the team,” Coach Hutsell said. “The team wrestled seven matches in 24 hours.”

Saturday, McIntosh wrestled in the Northwest Invitational in Dalton. The team tied Dalton for fourth place with 66 points. Four wrestlers, Ricky Smith (112), Carlos Dinkins (125), Eddie Smith (135), and Michael Lee (175), made the finals.

Both Smiths took first place. Ricky defeated Lezniak, a wrestler from Woodward Academy, 20-7 in the final and Eddie remained undefeated on the season, defeating another Woodward wrestler, Cheally, 8-6.

Dinkins and Lee both lost in the finals, placing second. It was Lee's first loss of the season. McIntosh will wrestle again Wednesday, hosting McEachern and Stockbridge at 5 p.m.

They will wrestle in the South Metro Invitational Friday and Saturday at Eagle's Landing.
