Kwanzaa, King Day will be focus of NAACP meeting

The Dec. 11 meeting of the Fayette County NAACP branch will include an African-American cultural celebration called Kwanzaa.

First introduced in 1966, Kwanzaa is a Swahili term meaning “first fruits.” It begins Dec. 26 and ends Jan. 1. Each of the seven days represents a cultural principal including unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

The celebration is generally an extension of the African-American Christmas holiday season and the celebration incorporates a candle lighting ceremony for each of the seven days.

The NAACP meeting will be a semi-social event and no refreshments will be served.

The branch will conduct some regular business including planning for an upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration Jan. 17 at the City Hall Mall in Peachtree City. The public will be invited.

Beginning at 4 p.m., the meeting will be at The Gathering Place, 203 McIntosh Trail, Peachtree City, between Peachtree Parkway and Ga. Highway 74. Take Hwy. 74 south to Kelly Drive, which becomes McIntosh Trail as you travel east, or take Peachtree Parkway south to McIntosh Trail, and turn right onto McIntosh Trail.
