News Briefs

Fayetteville City Council is expected to adopt a new tree protection and landscaping ordinance as well as a law prohibiting the parking of semi tractors in residential districts when it meets tomorrow night.

Council meets Monday at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

The lengthy agenda also includes six public hearings requested by local businesses whose beer and wine licenses are being suspended because they were caught selling alcohol to minors.

Council also will consider Newton Galloway's appeal of a Planning Commission denial of a variance to allow a fence in a front yard, as defined by city law. The law defines back yards that face streets as front yards, and prohibits building privacy fences in front yards.

Fayette County commissioners have reserved the option of using bonds issued by a special facilities authority to fund a new jail and courthouse for the county.

The panel voted last week to enact a dormant facilities authority that would have the power to issue revenue bonds without a public vote, but put off appointment of authority members until later.

Commissioners haven't yet decided how they want to finance the jail/judicial complex, and if the authority hasn't been enacted, then the option of authority-issued bonds would not be available to the county.

“This just gives us one more option to pursue,” said Commissioner Greg Dunn.
