Library closing for computer system work

The Peachtree City Library will be closed from Monday, Nov. 30, through Friday, Dec. 3, in order to ready the collection for a new Web-based catalog system.

Georgia Library PINES (Public Information Network for Electronic Services), an icon-driven system, will replace the library's outdated AS/400 catalog system, according to a written statement from the library. PINES is currently being installed in 26 regional systems throughout the state, encompassing a total of 96 libraries.

Library technology/training manager Jill Kuhns believes that patrons will find PINES extremely user-friendly.

“The old system required the users to specify whether they were searching by author, title or subject,” she said. “The big advantage to using PINES is that the user will have the ability to do a keyword search, that is, input a word or a phrase from the author, title, or subject in any particular order.”

To lessen the inconvenience to library patrons, the libraries within Fayette County have coordinated their closings so that at least one library in the county would be open at all times during this transition.

The library in Fayetteville will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 17, through Wednesday, Nov. 24. The Tyrone library will be open limited hours from Monday, Nov. 22, through Saturday, Dec. 4. For details, call the Tyrone library at 770-487-1565.

All libraries will be closed during the Thanksgiving holidays.
