Opening Today

Toy Story 2 — Woody and Buzz are back and this time it's Woody who needs rescuing. Believe it or not the animation has improved and this is one of the few animated sequels with the orignal voice talent returning. This should be a great holiday treat for everyone in your family. Rated G.

Now Playing

American Beauty — Finally, playing at Tinseltown and Westpark Walk, this critically acclaimed film is worth a viewing. The performances are stellar, the script is poignant, and the direction is superb. It will be a travesty if this film isn't nominated in every major category at the Academy Awards. Rated R.

Anywhere but Here — Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman star in this drama aimed at mothers and daughters. They are both excellent actresses but there is not much of a plot. Rated PG-13.

The Bachelor — Chris O'Donnell plays a man who must get married to get his massive inheritance. I'll bet somebody learns the true meaning of love along the way. Rated PG-13.

Being John Malkovich — Spike Jonze directs this film that seems to have everybody talking. John Cusack finds a door that leads into the mind of John Malkovich (the spooky actor). Soon, everybody is taking a ride inside the actor, but at what cost? This film is only playing at a few theaters, but it is spreading. Rated R.

The Best Man — A comedy about an author who gets into trouble writing about semi-fictional accounts with his friend's girlfriend. Starring Taye Diggs (Go) Rated R.

Blue Streak — Martin Lawrence plays a jewel thief who passes as a detective. If Eddie Murphy can do police comedy, Martin can do police comedy. I hear this is pretty good. Rated PG-13.

The Bone Collector — This was a great book, so be careful of the film. Denzel Washington plays a paralyzed man who was formerly a detective. He helps a rookie cop track down a serial killer. Rated R.

Dogma — I loved this movie. It's very funny for the first hour and then it takes on a more serious tone. The acting is great and the film itself is very thought provoking. Check it out. Rated R.

Double Jeopardy — You pretty much know where this one is headed. Ashley Judd plays the wrongly accused wife and Tommy Lee Jones is the pursuant who really wants to help her. Rated R.

House on Haunted Hill — This was actually very well done . It has a solid cast, good scares and innumerable plot twists. It is gory and not meant for children. Rated R.

The Insider — Russell Crowe and Al Pacino star in this film about a man revealing inside information on cigarette manufacturers to the news program 60 Minutes. This is based on a true story. Rated R.

Light it Up — A group of kids that are fed up with the stereotypes that they are nothing but violent thugs, hold a police officer hostage and take over the school. Rated R.

The Messenger — Luc Besson, director of The Fifth Element and The Professional, lends his overly creative eye to the story of Joan of Arc. The film has a great cast and awesome visual effects. Rated R.

Pokemon's First Movie — $52.1 million in five days ! That is sick ! I'm going into the fad business. I'm going to create the fad that surpasses Pokemon — Country Monkeys ! You laugh now, but you'll be crying next Christmas. Rated G.

The Sixth Sense — This is an incredible movie with one of the best endings in recent history. It is well acted, masterfully directed and ultra creepy without being ultra-blatant. Rated PG-13.

Sleepy Hollow — Tim Burton returns with this dark piece about the legend of Sleepy Hollow. This is a great film but it is also very violent. Johnny Depp is perfect as the nervous Ichabod Crane. Rated R.

The Straight Story — You may have heard about the man who drove 300 miles on his riding lawnmower to visit his sick brother. This is the movie based on that story and it is directed by David Lynch (Twin Peaks). This is only in Atlanta, too. Seems Fayette County Theaters only get the big movies that take up two or three screens. Rated G. (And that's not a typo).

The World is Not Enough — Another James Bond film with Pierce Brosnan as Bond. Brosnan is second only to Connery in my mind and the last two films have been a lot of fun. Expect more of the same. PG-13.

Also Playing

Big Daddy — Adam Sandler comedy about a slacker who adopts a little boy to win his girlfriend back. Granted this is at the dollar theater, but you've been able to rent it for three weeks. I'd rather view it at home, because you can fast forward through all of the sap. Rated PG-13.

Deep Blue Sea — Scientists experiment with sharks and deal with the consequences on the next Ricki Lake. Rated R.

Drive Me Crazy — The world loves the girl who plays Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart), let's put her in an awful teen comedy that is made of recycled teen movie cliche's. Rated PG-13.

For Love of the Game — If there's one thing that Kevin Costner does well, it's a baseball movie. This one is directed by Sam Raimi, a former wildman director known for the Evil Dead trilogy. He has toned down of late and become a seriously ambitious, yet still daring director. Rated PG-13

Inspector Gadget — It looked better than it really was, but it is fun for the whole family. Technically, you shouldn't ever see Claw's face, but...whatever. Rated PG.

In Too Deep — This is a film about undercover cops and what happens when they get too close to the truth. To be a good undercover cop, you have to get in, but sometimes you get in too deep. Rated R.

Mickey Blue Eyes — Hugh Grant marries into the mob and must try to fit in despite his intelligence, good looks and charm. Rated PG-13.

Mystery, Alaska — This looked like a fun film. An Alaskan hockey team gets a chance to play the New York Rangers in an outdoor match. The ragtag group of Alaskans must come together to defeat the professionals. The film was penned by David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal), so expect lots of sex and Al Green. Rated R.

Runaway Bride — There was so much hype about Richard Gere and Julia Roberts teaming up again that you thought Sonny and Cher were reuniting. This opened to warm reviews this summer, but it didn't clean up at the box office. If you think you'll be surprised and entertained, you probably will. Rated PG.

Teaching Mrs. Tingle — Students get revenge on a teacher that frames them for cheating. It probably has the usual sparkling Kevin Williamson dialogue but it doesn't look like anybody is having any fun. Rated PG-13.

The Iron Giant — An animated film that pays tribute to the classic Warner Brothers animation. Your kids should enjoy it and so should you. Rated PG.

The Thirteenth Warrior — Just a fun action movie from John McTiernan (Die Hard). The film is about a peaceful man, forced to battle some supernatural folk that have a taste for the living. Hint: The film was originally called Eaters of the Dead. If you like bloody battles and swashbuckling adventures, check it out. Rated R.
