Bill Talley won the Post 1 seat on the Fayetteville City Council Tuesday with a 369-270 runoff win over Clyde Avery. Just under 13 percent of the city's 5,015 registered voters went to the polls for the runoff, which was necessary because none of the three candidates in the Nov. 3 municipal election received more than 50 percent of the vote. Talley and Avery were in the runoff by virtue of being the two top vote getters in the election. Talley will take office in January, along with Mayor-elect Kenneth Steele. Current Mayor Mike Wheat elected not to run for reelection, and Steele, current councilman in Post 1, was elected to take his place. Post 2 Councilman Glenn Brewer ran for reelection and was not opposed. Now that a new mayor and Post 1 councilman have been elected, one of the Fayetteville City Council's first orders of business is to replace Councilman-elect Bill Talley on the city Planning and Zoning Commission, where he has served as chairman for two years. Residents interested in being considered for appointment to the commission can phone city clerk Judy Stephens at 770-461-6029 for instructions on how to place their names in consideration. The commission studies proposals for annexation and rezoning, making its recommendation for final action by the City Council. The group also is the final authority, short of the appeals process, on matters such as development plans and site plans for construction projects.
