City looking for judicial candidates

By MONROE ROARK

Interested individuals and firms who would like to do some work for Peachtree City in the legal arena are now invited to throw their hats into the ring.

The city is soliciting proposals for the positions of city attorney and Municipal Court judge. Proposals are being accepted at City Hall until 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19.

Mitch Powell is the city's current judge, while legal work for the city is handled by Webb, Stuckey and Lindsey.

The fact that proposals are being accepted is by no means an indication that there will be changes in either position, according to public information specialist Betsy Tyler. The city is simply testing the market to see if there are any interested parties, and there has been little response in the past few years, she added.

The city attorney attends City Council meetings and represents the city in any litigation, provides legal opinions to the staff and council, and in some cases, prepares ordinances for council consideration.

The Municipal Court judge must be at least 21 years of age and have a license to practice law in the state of Georgia, have courtroom experience in criminal-type cases, be able to issue warrants, be available for court on a weekly basis, and be willing to become certified.

The City Council must vote on these appointments every year, and usually does so in January, Tyler said, but the same proposals can often be used for up to three years.

Specifications for the positions and proposal requirements are available at City Hall, 151 Willowbend Road in Peachtree City. Interested parties may contact the Personnel Department at 770-487-2762.
