Senoia's utility poles are coming down

By Jan. 1, the look of downtown Senoia will have changed dramatically.

The Senoia City Council voted unanimously Monday night to spend $6,571 to remove utility poles off Main Street from its intersection with Pylant Street south to the railroad tracks.

The removal of the poles has been a pet project of Mayor Joan Trammell's since she took office nearly two years ago and was spearheaded by Downtown Development Authority chairman Frank Hollberg.

Hollberg worked with officials from BellSouth and Georgia Power to secure the relatively low cost for the removal. It will cost slightly more than $1,000 to remove the poles and approximately $5,500 to move the transformers to the backs of businesses on Main Street and reconnect the utilities.

Business owners along Main Street, such as Tom Harber, Hollberg and Jimmy Hutchinson, have pledged nearly $1,800 toward the project, and Trammell praised the efforts of the townspeople working together on the project.

“When you apply for grants, it's helpful to show that citizens are willing to participate,” she said.

Hollberg said he feels comfortable that the rest of the utility poles will be removed by the end of 2000.

Trammell wants the poles removed and period lighting fixtures installed to enhance the city's historic features.

With work set to begin on the city's sewer system, Trammell is hopeful that the town's downtown will be revitalized.
