Although the group had slightly more than a month to plan, the first Heart of Gold Golf Tournament was deemed a success by the organizers.

More than $6,000 was raised for the American Heart Association. Numerous local sponsors helped to make the tournament successful. Gold's Gym, Pro Golf Discount, Southeast Properties, Bulldog Supply, Chick-fil-A, Coffee & Things, Powertel, Affairs of the Heart Catering, Braelinn and Kedron Kroger were the major sponsors and 25 other local businesses and individuals sponsored holes on the course..

Bulldog Supply supplied a Club Car Golf Cart as the hole-in-one prize, although no one won it.

Close to 60 golfers gathered for breakfast, lunch, prizes and, of course, golfing, at WhiteWater Country Club on the 27th. Volunteers from Gold's Gym, the American Heart Association and the local Board all helped. The weather cooperated beautifully, making for a great day of golfing.

Next year's tournament is already being planned. According to Deborah Bonner, tournament coordinator, “We learned a lot this year. One of the main things we learned is that it's much easier if we give ourselves more time to plan.”
