Fayetteville City Council members want to see a new tenant in the old Wal-Mart building on Glynn Street, but they're reluctant to make any special exceptions to get one, they said last week . Council Monday will vote on a requested sign variance for Hobby Lobby, an Oklahoma-based chain of stores that sell crafts, home improvement and recreational products. The firm proposes to use 57,714 square feet of the vacant building for one of its first stores in the Georgia market. Council members discussed the variance during a work session last week, and said they are reluctant to give Hobby Lobby more space for its sign than the law normally allows, because the city has held other similar stores to its normal standards. Council meets at 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall, and also will vote on a contract for maintenance of its newly beautified Ga. Highway 54 medians. Fayetteville residents Tuesday will elect a new mayor and Post 1 councilman. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. at the city's Old Depot, next to the former City Hall on East Lanier Avenue. Running for mayor are Kenneth Steele and Paul Oddo. Council hopefuls are Bill Talley, Paul Carter and Clyde Avery. For information on the candidates, see the Wednesday, Oct. 27 edition of The Citizen, or look up that issue at www.thecitizennews.com. Election results also will be on the web site starting Tuesday night.
