Chiefs champions of area, falter in state sectionals

The McIntosh Chiefs volleyball team recently traveled to the home of their rivals, the Fayette County Tigers, for the AAAA Area 2 Championship Tournament.

To get to the finals, which would be at McIntosh later in the week, and meet the Tigers, McIntosh had to defeat Douglas, LaGrange and Newnan.

The Chiefs eliminated all three teams in two games, staying undefeated for the season. After their wins, the championship was set. The match between McIntosh and Fayette County would be for bragging rights as much as it would be for the area championship. To win, one team would have to take three out of five games.

The first game was an intense one. The Chiefs narrowly defeated the Tigers. Heather Dockstader led the charge with five points, six kills and one ace. Megan Bartels chipped in four points, one kill and two aces. The second game was an all-out blowout. McIntosh blanked Fayette County 15-0. Katie Powers was the lead scorer for the Chiefs, netting seven points, including two aces, and recording a kill. Vanessa Contreras, Kathryn Murphy and Amanda Vonderhaar continued to play well.

The third and deciding game was also won by McIntosh, but Fayette County fought hard. Whitney Wallis led the Chiefs in scoring, scoring five points. Kristi Oates added three points and had two kills. Six Chiefs recorded kills in the match, cementing their place as area champions and their chance to go to the state sectionals.

The Chiefs hit on some bad luck in the sectionals, though. Senior setter Vanessa Contreras did not play due to personal matters and McIntosh just could not hang on.

They started off right, though. They defeated Jenkins-Savannah in two games, 15-14, 15-9, but they lost to Sequoyah in three games and then got swept by Parkview. Their final record for the season was 29-13. McIntosh finished the season as AAAA Area 2 regular season and tournament champions. Six players will return to the squad next year, four of which will be experienced and hungry seniors.
