Great Georgia Ghosts offers a spirited time

Did you see that out of the corner of your eye? What was that thing moving?

It was probably just your imagination, or maybe it was the return of the Widow Holliday, giving local residents a thrilling tour through the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife house in Fayetteville. You see, this region is full of ghosts and where there are ghosts, there are ghost stories.

The Friends of the Holliday House and the Southern Order of Storytellers have teamed up to put on the fourth annual Great Georgia Ghosts story telling tours. The lamp light tours go through the Holliday House and the old City Cemetery, while stories about the famous former residents are told.

“They are true Georgia ghost stories,” said Sherri Anderson, director of Main Street Fayetteville, “if there can be true ghost stories.” The central part of the stories will be the Hollidays, but the tale of the little girl lost in the tornado also will be told. Getting the stories together was a team effort between what the Friends of the Holliday House knew and what the Southern Order of Storytellers knew.

The tour of the house lasts approximately 20-30 minutes. The way the tour is being run this year is a little different from other years. Tickets for the tours will go on sale at 6:30 p.m. If you have a waiting period before your tour, you are invited to visit the Pumpkin Walk site or take the tour of the City Cemetery.

The tours will be guided by costumed figures in lamp light. They are hoping to create a spooky atmosphere that is creepy, but not terrifying. Anderson says the tour is appropriate for children who are old enough to understand at least a little of what is being said. “It will definitely be a unique way to spend Halloween,” Anderson said.

The Great Georgia Ghost Tours will be offered Friday and Saturday evening at 7:30. Tickets go on sale at 6:30 p.m. and cost $5 for adults and $3 for children. There will be plenty of Halloween spirit in the area on both Friday and Saturday for people to enjoy.
