The
Fayette County Board of Education in 1959 had a
far different agenda than the current board.
According
to minutes supplied Monday night to document the
deeding of 17 acres of county property to the
board for school purposes, it was learned that on
Jan. 6, 1959 the board discussed a state
recommendation to abolish the 12th grade.
After
due consideration, the board of education passed
a resolution directing the superintendent to
write a letter in the name of the board of
education to the state superintendent of schools,
voicing our objections to the abolition of the
12th grade in our high schools, the minutes
state.
The
financial report showed a balance of $71,500.36
in the school board account. The board, composed
of W.F. Farr, D.A. Harp, W.W. Mask and W.M. Gay
Jr., reelected J.C. Booth principal of Fayette
County High School and discussed a $1,500 partial
payment to Loy Cochran for his school bus,
allowing Robert Storey to drive the bus.
