Brooks election postponed By CAROLYN CARY

Due
to an unusual set of circumstances, elections for
Brooks municipal posts this year will be delayed
until early next year.
Town
Council Posts 4, 5 and 6 were up for reelection
this fall, but Jimmy Lindsey, Post 4, announced
early on that he would not be seeking reelection.
Dan
Langford Jr. in Post 5 and Mike Hanson, Post 6,
both qualified to run for reelection, and were
unopposed, so no election will be necessary for
their posts.
C.
W. Howell was the only candidate who qualifed for
Post 4, so it appeared no election would be
needed at all, but after qualifying closed it was
discovered that Howell was a couple of weeks shy
of living the required one year in Brooks.
It
is too late to go through the qualifying process
again for the Nov. 2 election, so a special
election will be necessary.
Town
attorney David Winkle told the council at its
Oct. 18 meeting that the U.S. Justice Department
must be advised that a special election will be
conducted and there would be a period of 60 days
before approval would be given. He said that
concurrently with this period, the town could
proceed with running the required legal
advertising and that the election could be
conducted in early spring.
