Planners to vote on
new church trailer regulations By DAVE HAMRICK

Proposed
new language in Fayette County's zoning
regulations will allow more flexibility for
growing churches to use temporary classroom
trailers.
The
county Planning Commission will have a public
hearing and vote on the proposed changes at its
Nov. 4 business meeting, 7 p.m. at the County
Administrative Complex.
If
planning commissioners vote to recommend the
change, the county Board of Commissioners could
take a final vote as early as its Dec. 1 work
session. The commission's normal fourth Thursday
meeting has been cancelled due to Thanksgiving.
Current
law allows churches to use temporary classroom
trailers for a specified period during initial
construction, and states that under no
circumstances will they be allowed to use
them after that.
The
problem, said a spokesman for New Hope Baptist
Church, is that strict interpretation of the law
prohibits churches from using temporary
classrooms during expansion construction
projects.
The
new language would allow the trailers for
construction projects subsequent to the initial
construction for up to two years, or until 30
days after issuance of the certificate of
occupancy for the expansion, whichever comes
first.
