F'ville mayor, 1 council post up for grabs

Candidates list campaign donations

By DAVE HAMRICK
Staff Writer

Two candidates for mayor and three for City Council Post 1 will go to the voters Tuesday in Fayetteville's municipal election.

Kenneth T. Steele, a Delta Air Lines pilot, and Paul C. Oddo Jr., CPA and restaurant owner, are in a race for the mayor's chair following the announcement last month that current Mayor Mike Wheat will not seek reelection.

Steele is a member of council, and his announcement that he would run for mayor left his Post 1 seat without an incumbent in this year's balloting.

Oddo has never run for public office.

Seeking the voters' approval to occupy Steele's seat on council are Bill Talley, chief financial officer for a Pine Mountain bank; Clyde Avery, a broker for office management firm Southeastern Properties Inc., and Paul Carter, owner of two Jonesboro restaurants and Fayetteville Family Billiards.

Post 2 Councilman Glenn Brewer is up for reelection as well, but he is the only person who has qualified to run for his seat and, unless there is a write-in candidate, will be elected by default.

Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Old Depot on Stonewall Avenue. For information on the candidates, see page 4A and 5A.

Candidates were required to turn in reports of all financial contributions and campaign expenditures as of last Friday, and all Fayetteville candidates had done so except council candidate Paul Carter.

The remaining candidates' reported funds are listed below, in alphabetical order by post.
