Local Lutherans, Catholics eye historic accord

Local Roman Catholics and Lutherans will join Oct. 31 to celebrate an event of historical significance to churches throughout the world when leaders of both bodies meet on the same day to sign a Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification in Augsburg, Germany.

Peachtree City's Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church will worship together at 3 p.m. at the Lutheran church, 101 Peachtree Parkway North.

The Rev. John Walsh and the Rev. John Weber will lead the service and preach the sermon. Jennifer Hepler, vicar at Christ Our Shepherd, will lead a liturgy that she helped design.

Choirs from both congregations will combine to provide special music under the direction of Claire Stroud, director of music at Holy Trinity, and David Beecher of the Lutheran church.

“This service is symbolic of our coming together,” Hepler said. “It will look a good bit like a regular worship — hymns, a processional, with a sermon that may reflect the dialog between the Catholic archbishop and our bishop at the 1999 Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA last summer.”

Invitations are being extended to other Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches throughout the area, Hepler said, adding that everyone is welcome. For information, phone 770-487-8717.
