Many local happenings this Halloween

By MICHAEL BOYLAN

October is one of the only months in the year that gets to use silly, seasonal plays on words.

For example, October is often called Shocktober and if there are a plethora of events occurring, it is called a spooktacular instead of just a plain spectacular. Fayette County will have lots going on in the period before Halloween, though some old favorites will be missing this year.

Goblin's Hollow, an annual event sponsored by the Peachtree City Optimist Club, will stay dead this year. The trails around the Peachtree City Amphitheater are usually full of haunted happenings, but there just was not enough time or people involved to pull it off this year. George Cabral of the Peachtree City Optimist Club explained, “We thought we might be able to scale the event down, but we decided not to do it this year and try to get it back to form next year.”

New to the scene this year is Jitterbuggers Teen Center. They will have a party for members Oct. 31 from 7-10 p.m. and from 1-5 p.m the younger siblings of members are invited to come over to the club and trick or treat. Also that week, local band Pandora's Box will offer its Fright Show at the club.

The Fayette County Library will offer a few events to make the festive end of the month frighteningly fun. Wednesday, Oct. 27, the library will celebrate its Founders Day with a Halloween Feast. The staff also will get into full costume to celebrate the holiday. For information, call 770-461-8841.

The Fayette County Recreation Department also will get into the spirit of things with two events. Friday, Oct. 23, an extreme teens trip to the Six Flags Fright Fest is planned. The cost of the trip is the price of admission and a $5 registration fee. Teens with season passes will not have to pay separate admission. The Recreation Department also has $10 off coupons.

The second event is a Recreation Department event for disabled children Oct. 28. The Monster Mash dance is a county wide recreational opportunity for exceptional children in Fayetteville, Peachtree City and Tyrone between ages 5 and 21. The cost of the dance is a $5 registration fee. For information, call 770-461-9714, 770-631-2542, or 770-487-4694.

Last, but certainly not least, is the annual Pumpkin Walk sponsored by Main Street Fayetteville. The walk consists of an estimated 2,500 costumed local elementary students walking around downtown Fayetteville. The event is much like a parade and can cause severe traffic problems during the walk. The students transport their pumpkin creations to the grounds of the Old Courthouse, City Hall, Heritage Park, and the County Administrative Complex at Stonewall Village.

Room mothers for all of the classes participating will light the pumpkins at dusk Friday evening and then again on Halloween. Each child participating will receive a certificate of participation that will be signed by Mayor Mike Wheat and Fayette Community Hospital's administrator Darrell Cutts, a Pumpkin Walk sponsor.

Trick or Treat on Main Street will begin downtown at 4 p.m. Friday evening. Children can pick up candy at stores marked with paper pumpkins in the window. The festivities will last until 6 p.m., which should be just enough time to see all of the pumpkins lit up.

In addition, spooky stories will fill thje shadowed rooms of the 1855 Holliday-Dorsey Fife House at the “Great georgia Ghosts” tour Oct. 29 and 30. The `Widow Holliday” will welcome visitors into candlelit rooms for the fourth annual storytelling event of classic ghost tales at the downtown Fayetteville house-museum. With paid admission, guests will receive free admission to the Old City Cemetery Tour.

Weather permitting, costumed guides will take you on a spooky spin through Fayetteville's historic cemetery by lamplight. Tickets for “Great Georgia Ghosts” are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Tickets go on sale at 6:30 p.m. and each tour lasts approximately 20 minutes. The storytelling begins at 7:30 p.m. Call 770-461-6029 or 770-460-6322.

There is plenty to do during this special time of the year. It is a time for children and parents to get together, dress up, and have a howlingly good time. No matter what your age, the holiday is an infectious time that makes us all feel young again.
