Crucial games to be played this weekend

Welcome to the seventh week of the high school football season. The nights are a little more chilly now and the football action is more intense.

Tonight's matches could have some significant post-season ramifications for many of the teams playing.

The biggest game of the night has to be the battle of the two unbeatens. Starr's Mill (5-0) hosts Mt. Zion, Jonesboro (6-0) at Tiger Stadium in Fayetteville. Mt. Zion narrowly defeated Sandy Creek last Friday and a win over Starr's Mill would lock them in the top spot for the regular season. The Panthers have a long season left ahead of them, but a win would vault them into the top ten and make the road to the playoffs a little easier.

Sandy Creek (4-1) will host Jones County (4-1) this Friday. The interesting thing in this match is that both teams lost to Mt. Zion, Jonesboro. The Patriots would like to keep their defensive game plan in and definitely look to bounce back from their loss. They have plenty of offensive weapons which seem to get better as the season wears on.

Fayette County (3-3) travels to East Coweta (4-2) for a match that could tie things up in 4-AAAA if the Tigers can pull off an upset. East Coweta has won four games in a row and has been simply explosive on offense. Fayette County has lost two games in a row and has had some trouble scoring lately. Look for the Indians to rely on W. J. Jordan and for the Tigers to try and establish a running game early.

McIntosh (1-5) travels to face the Upson Lee Knights(2-4) this Friday in what could be one of the closer games of the season for the Chiefs. While McIntosh has struggled this season, there are a few bright spots that can lead the team to a victory. Jim O'Shea has been doing a good job at quarterback and his receivers have come up with some big catches in the past few weeks. It will be a battle, but it will also be close.

In other games this Friday, Landmark Christian (0-5) will try to get its first win against Bremen (3-3). Landmark is a young team that has had some trouble being overmatched this season. Bremen is a tough team but the War Eagles are due and might just sneak away with this one.

The Northgate Vikings (2-3) will travel to play an opponent in AA, Tri-County (2-3). Northgate beat Landmark last week and, despite being a young team, their confidence continues to grow. It will take some solid defense and a few Tri-County mistakes, but Northgate could be at .500 Saturday morning.
