Early Saturday morning, the streets and cart paths of Peachtree City will be filled with athletes of every race, age and gender. The 15th annual Peachtree City Classic will be run this weekend with a 15K race on the course voted best course in Georgia by Georgia Athlete magazine. The 15K race also will serve as the 1999 National Championship race for the Road Runners Club of America. Sponsored by the Peachtree City Running Club as a way for the club to support the goals of its group as well as to gain new members, the Peachtree City Classic grows year by year. This year on top of the usual men's and women's 5K race, the club will host the 15K Open race. The courses are on the cart paths alongside some of Peachtree City's more beautiful scenery. Runners round curves, go over bridges and through tunnels as they work their way from start to finish. In past years, mothers and daughters have raced each other, and entire families have come out for a good healthy jog. The Peachtree City Running Club has always been involved in strengthening the community, as well as the people in it. With the money raised by last year's race, the club made donations to the fire and police departments, as well as to local scholars with a desire to run. The fire and police departments provide free service during the race, giving full medical and security support to the event. New to this year's race will be a pre-race expo Friday, Oct. 15 from 5-7 p.m. at the Peachtree City Wyndham Conference Center. The expo will feature health and fitness products and equipment, information from sponsors and select vendors, and it also will provide local runners a chance to come in and pick up their race packets. Each runner will get an assortment of goodies after the race, including food, promotional products and shirts. More than 150 awards will be given out in a wide range of age and gender categories. The awards ceremony will be after the 15K race is completed. The running begins at 8:50 a.m. Saturday with the Men's 5K, then the Women's 5K at 9 a.m. and the 15K Open race at 9:10 a.m. Registration is still open for all three races.
