Week six was full of local losses

There were three football games played by teams from this county Friday night and none of them won.

McIntosh hosted a red-hot East Coweta team, and Fayette County and Sandy Creek played the best teams in their region, Lovejoy and Mt. Zion-Jonesboro, respectively.

East Coweta hammered the Chiefs in the first half, holding them to only six yards of offense. The score at halftime was 34-0 and East Coweta's main man was W. J. Jordan. Jordan rushed for 242 yards and four touchdowns on nine carries.

The Indians put in some of their reserves in the second half and McIntosh scored several times. Tony Franks scored two touchdowns and Rico Blackman scored one. The Chiefs lost 41-20.

Fayette County did not fare well with the Lovejoy Wildcats, though their defense hung tough for the first half. Lovejoy managed only three first downs in the first half, but they did manage to put up 16 points, mainly from Fayette County mistakes. The Tigers drove for 216 yards in the game, but could never get anything going, eventually losing 36-0.

Sandy Creek battled a tough Mt. Zion-Jonesboro team Friday night and kept it close. Though their offense gathered only 33 yards in the first half, the Patriots defense also did a good job of keeping the Trojans offense under wraps. The Trojans scored first and then did not score again until a blocked punt with four minutes remaining in the first half.

The blocked punt was run in for a touchdown and Mt. Zion led 14-0 at the half.

Sandy Creek then controlled the ball and put together a long touchdown drive that kept the Trojan offense off the field. When Mt. Zion got the ball back, they put together a long drive, over nine minutes long, to take the lead and the game with them, 21-7.

Games this week also will be fairly interesting. Fayette County (3-3) travels to play East Coweta (4-2) and a Tiger win could tie those two teams up. With a little bit of offense and a little bit of luck it will be close. The Tigers must find a way to stop the juggernaut Jordan if they are to win.

McIntosh (1-5) travels to face the Upson-Lee Knights. They won't have as hard a time generating offense as they did Friday night, but it will still be a battle for the Chiefs. Look for the McIntosh offense to be hungry and for the defense to try and create opportunities for the offense. If it all comes together right, the Chiefs could head back to Peachtree City with their second victory under their belts.

Starr's Mill (5-0) comes back from a bye week to face the top team in their region, The Mt. Zion-Jonesboro Trojans (6-0). Mt. Zion defeated Sandy Creek last week, but it was their biggest struggle of the season. Look for Starr's Mill to try and do everything Sandy Creek did right defensively Friday, as well as put a few sneaky plays in for the offense to try and shock the Trojans into a loss.

Sandy Creek (4-1) faces Jones County (4-1) Friday. Jones County's only loss this season came to Mt. Zion-Jonesboro. They are a tough team and they are looking to lock into the second place position behind the Trojans.

Sandy Creek did not play terribly last week and the defense accomplished a number of their goals. The Patriots will look to establish their running game early and try to control the game from the kickoff.
