The Fayette County chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has two important meetings planned for October, both in Peachtree City. Peachtree City Police Chief James Murray and Mayor Pro Tempore Annie McMenamin are scheduled to speak Saturday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. at the Fayette County NAACP meeting at the Gathering Place on McIntosh Trail. Murray will discuss issues concerning law enforcement in Peachtree City, while McMenamin is to address the membership on topics relating to city administration. Fayette NAACP President Edward Johnson is actively seeking out city and county officials to get acquainted and create a constructive dialogue to improve race relations, according to a recent written statement. Members and nonmembers are strongly encouraged to attend this very important meeting. Another important event in October for the NAACP is its Freedom Fund Banquet, Saturday, Oct. 23, from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Aberdeen Woods Conference Center. Keynote speaker for the banquet is U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney of Georgia's 4th District. WAGA-TV FOX 5 reporter Rick Blalock will serve as the emcee for the evening's festivities. In addition to what should be warm hospitality, lively entertainment, delicious cuisine and inspirational messages, valuable prizes will be awarded and several outstanding Fayette citizens will be appropriately honored for their significant contributions to the NAACP and/or their community, the NAACP stated. Tickets for the semiformal affair are $50 for adults and $25 for students. For information, call 770-460-9934.
