Home Depot will be calling Peachtree City home, but nobody knows yet exactly where it will be. The home and garden retail giant is considering two locations and, with controversy swirling over one of them, a plan is scheduled to be presented to the Planning Commission at its regular meeting Monday night. The first phase of the proposed development of the Huddleston property, on Ga. Highway 54 near Line Creek Parkway, is up for conceptual site plan approval at this meeting. The front 20 or so acres of the 43-acre site would contain the Home Depot under the plan submitted by RAM Development. Also on the drawing board for the back of the property is a Wal-Mart superstore, but that is not part of the first phase. This comes amid considerable debate on how to handle traffic in the already snarled corridor surrounding the intersection of highways 54 and 74. A traffic impact ordinance has been suggested, as has a possible building moratorium for the area. The City Council was scheduled to discuss the traffic issue further last night. But developers and their attorneys have made it known in no uncertain terms that they believe projects in the works now are immune from any future ordinances related to traffic, and they consider all of their legal options if their projects are stopped. Meanwhile, Home Depot has been planning a store in the Kedron Village area near Kroger for some time now. That project is already in the engineering stage, according to city officials. While it is almost certain that there will not be two Home Depot stores in Peachtree City, there has been no indication yet that either site is favored over the other, and both are apparently proceeding as planned, for the time being. City staff has some concerns about the Huddleston proposal which will be addressed before the Planning Commission. Those are mainly related to the layout of the 130,000-sq. ft. center, such as Home Depot's typical building style and outdoor displays. Other agenda items slated for this Planning Commission meeting include conceptual site plans for the Barrow retail center at Hwy. 74 and Wisdom Road, Southeast Properties' site on Hwy. 74 South, and renovations to the Bank of America at Glenloch and Hwy. 54. Two new Planning Commission members will be introduced at the meeting, and a new chairman and vice chairman will be elected.
