The Fayette County school counselors have formed a local professional association which represents their distinct role in the school system.

The purpose of the organization is to enhance the profession of school counseling, to promote an improved understanding and appreciation of guidance and counseling services, to enhance a spirit of unity and to provide opportunities for staff development. The first meeting was held recently, with Fayette County Board of Education attorney, Emily Harbin, speaking to the group on the topic, ”Legal and Ethical Issues in School Counseling.”

Officers of the new association include, President Dan Lorton; President-elect, Faith Smith; Worksetting Vice-presidents, Sonya Tucker, Susan Earwood, and Ross Blackwood; Secretary Billye Anderson; and Treasurer Sandy Perrin.

The Fayetteville City Council will meet Monday evening at 7 p.m. to discuss amendments to the city's tree ordinance and have first reading of a rezoning on N. Jeff Davis Drive.

, The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) annual “Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition” for ninth through twelfth grade students is now open for submissions of essays. According to Commander Frank Hyde of Peachtree City VFW Post 9949, entrants should write and then record a three to five minute essay on their view of “America's Role for the Next Century.” The state winner will receive a $100 national scholarship, with the top winner in the nation eligible for a $20,000 first place award. Deadline for submitting essays is November 1. For entry forms, phone Duane Hennen at 770-487-6601 or students may contact their school guidance counselor's office.
