One of the youngest of the 110 churches in Fayette County, the Southern Crescent Church of Christ is just three years old. In 1996, there were 75 people who met in a day care center, and established the fact they wanted to reach out to those in the Southern Crescent area who felt lost and without a church home. After meeting for over a year, they began to meet in the Flat Rock Middle School on Jenkins Road. There are currently 200 members. Owning 22 acres on Dogwood Trail, they hope to break ground for their very own building by the end of the year. Its new pastor is Carter Schultz, who arrived two months ago. He is a native of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. After graduating from high school there, he attended Abilene Christian University in Texas, where he majored in Accounting. During the next four years as a C.P.A., he felt as though his life's work may lay in another field and one thing after another led him in the direction of the ministry. He applied to the graduate school at his alma mater and graduated with a Masters in Divinity this past May. While at college the first time, he met his wife, Paige, who has a degree in Elementary Education. They are the parents of a daughter, Abigail, who is 18 months old. “Our church is a church of worship,” said the Rev. Schultz, “and we want people to feel freedom in that worship. We truly believe in our Mission Statement, `reaching out to touch lives with the good news of Jesus Christ throughout Atlanta's southern crescent ... one heart at a time.'” The Flat Rock Middle School is at 325 Jenkins Road in Tyrone. Sunday morning Bible Study is at 9 a.m. and Worship Service is at 10 a.m. On Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evenings, small group worship is held at various homes.
