Local teams win some important games

Sandy Creek had a week off last week to think about their not so pretty victory from the week before. The other three county teams won, and the results vary from beautiful to just as ugly.

The McIntosh Chiefs (1-3) picked up their first win of the season and it happened as the Chiefs hosted homecoming. The game was so much like a Hollywood movie, that one of the players who was integral to the win, had been named Homecoming King at the half. McIntosh faced Stockbridge (0-4) and took a lead for the first time all season by scoring in the opening quarter. Randy Klimetz had a seven yard touchdown run to give the Chiefs the 7-0 lead. It was short-lived as Stockbridge ran back the kickoff for a touchdown to tie the game.

Klimetz would give the Chiefs the lead again when he sacked Tiger quarterback Jeremy Tomberlain in the endzone for a safety. Stockbridge scored the next touchdown to take a 13-9 lead at the half. They opened up the third quarter with another touchdown to make the lead 21-9, but the Chiefs would not go out quietly.

Cori Penson intercepted a Stockbridge pass in the fourth quarter to give McIntosh the ball. On a crucial fourth down, Jim O'Shea, quarterbacking for the Chiefs, faked a punt and completed a pass to Travis Van Winkle. O'Shea hit Robert Landy in the endzone for a touchdown. The score was 21-16. The Chiefs executed a perfect onside kick and gave themselves an opportunity to win it. O'Shea hooked up with van Winkle and Landy several times, before capping it off with a touchdown pass to Van Winkle in the endzone with 42 seconds remaining. McIntosh won 22-21.

There were lots of positive things working for McIntosh and the win was a definite confidence boost. O'Shea did a great job of hitting his receivers, who did a great job of catching the ball. The offensive line gave the Chiefs great opportunities to execute the plays. McIntosh travels to face undefeated Lovejoy on Friday. Look for the Chiefs to play with lots of intensity.

Fayette County (3-1) hosted Carver (2-2) on Friday night and despite an ugly second half, won by a score of 23-14. The ground attack was not there for the Tigers on Friday night. They only gained 51 yards all night on the ground. Wes Clark did score the first touchdown off of a 10 yard run, which was set up by a 77 yard pass to T.J. Brandenburg. Quarterback Nathaniel Enloe did a great job of passing in the first half, completing five passes for 139 yards. It was in the second half that the offense stalled.

Enloe had completed a 32 yard pass to Grant Herron for a touchdown, giving the Tigers a slim 15-14 lead. The score was the same with 3:30 to go in the game and Carver was driving towards the endzone. Safety Trevor Bowman intercepted a Carver pass in the endzone and ran it back 105 yards for a touchdown and the victory. The final score was 23-14, after the Tigers made the two point conversion.

Fayette County travels to play the winless Stockbridge Tigers on Friday night. They should not rest on their laurels however. Stockbridge's loss to McIntosh was their second loss of the season by a point. They are a better team than their record would indicate and it will be a true Tiger fight for both teams.

Starr's Mill (4-0) kept their winning streak going by beating Eagle's Landing on Friday night, but their win was about as ugly as Sandy Creek's win over the Eagles the week before. Though the Panthers had 152 yards on the ground and 197 yards in the air, they had three turnovers, three almost turnovers, and 10 penalties. Eagle's landing turned the ball over a number of times and, much like the Creek a week ago, Starr's Mill could not put them away.

Craig Maddock recorded the first touchdown, by throwing a 30 yard strike to Michael Thompson, after quarterback Brad McClaren faked a punt to keep the drive alive. The next several drives for both teams resulted in turnovers, but Starr's Mill was the next to score. McClaren hooked up with Maddock for a two yard touchdown pass. The Panthers led 14-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, McClaren hit Drew Cofty with a 19 yard touchdown pass. Eagle's Landing then scored but Starr's Mill was not done scoring. McClaren threw another touchdown pass to Bo Clark. Eagle's Landing scored again, but Starr's Mill would strike last. Drew Cofty had a 12 yard touchdown run to give the Panthers the victory.

The mistakes will have to disappear this week when Starr's Mill hosts Jonesboro. Jonesboro is 0-3 but their losses have come against the two other 4-0 teams in the region, Mt. Zion, Jonesboro and Jones County. Jonesboro stayed pretty close to both teams and then only lost to Forest Park by a few points. It will be homecoming for Starr's Mill and the Panthers do not want to diasppoint.

Speaking of Forest Park (2-2), that is who Sandy Creek will host this Friday during their homecoming. Forest Park has lost two in a row, but they have faced Mt. Zion, Jonesboro and Jones County in their last two games. They are an athletic and well-coached team and it will be a fight to the finish for the Patriots.
