County promises help with silt problems in lake

“If you can't do anything else, tell us who we need to go after,” was Jim Bass's plea to the Fayette County Commission last week.

Bass and Jerry Darby, both of Davis Road, said construction of Stonebriar subdivision nearby is filling Stevens Lake up with silt.

The subdivision is in Fayetteville, but the lake is in unincorporated Fayette County, said Darby. Coordination between the city and county is needed to get the problem stopped, he added.

Commissioners assured the residents that assistant county manager Chris Cofty has begun working on the problem along with city officials, and hopes to have solutions to offer soon.

“These people have lived here 30 years and tried to protect their lake,” said Bob Craft, who lives downstream from Darby and Bass. “Something needs to be done.”
