Wayne Ewing, poet, priest and psychotherapist, will be in the Atlanta area Oct. 4, 5 and 6 to sign copies of his book, Tears in God's Bottle: Reflections on Alzheimer's Caregiving, in which he chronicles the battle he fought alongside his wife during her five-year journey through early-onset Alzheimer's. Ann was herself a brilliant educator and psychotherapist, as well as wife, mother and grandmother. But before this evil disease took her life in 1995, at the age of 60, it claimed her very humanity. Like many who are care givers to loved ones, Ewing sometimes felt alone and overwhelmed, as though he could bear no more. In Tears, however, he shares a series of brief devotionals based on his discovery of unimagined spiritual resources. In scripture and prayer he learned of the power of love that opens the way for God to vanquish evil and heal its terrible wounds. Mary Kay Moore of Peachtree City, an advocate for persons with developmental disabilities, said she knows of no comparable resource for Alzheimer's caregivers. The terror of the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, like any other terminal illness, not only creates fear in the victim but also in survivors, who know there will be total destruction of the loved person and relationships long before their approaching death begins to be demonstrated, she said. The author's faith along with God, his family and his friends allowed him to survive his tremendous loss, she added. Derived from his experience, his thoughts, prayers, Bible verses, and poetic words offer strength for all who have been, will be, or are caregivers. This is a MUST-read book for anyone who has a family member or friend with a terminal illness. Ewing will be signing copies of Tears at Omega Books in Peachtree Crossing, 100 Peachtree Pkwy. N., Peachtree City Monday, Oct. 4 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. (770-487-3977) and at Waldenbooks, 7145 Ga. Highway 85 S, Riverdale, Tuesday, Oct. 5 from noon to 3 p.m. (770-991-3634). He also will present a discussion on spiritual resources for care givers at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 101 Peachtree Pkwy. N., Peachtree City, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. (770-487-8717), and will be at St. Andrew's-in-the-Pines Episcopal Church, 316 Peachtree Pkwy. N., Peachtree City, Oct. 6 following a 6:30 p.m. potluck supper (770-487-8415). There is no charge for any of these events and the public is welcome. In his presentations, Ewing engages local Alzheimer's Associations, to which part of the proceeds of the book goes. The book is available at Omega Books and Waldenbooks, as well as at Fayette Book Shop in Fayetteville, Scott's Book Store in Newnan, and Barnes & Noble in Morrow.
