Just 15 years after the beginning of Peachtree City, several couples met in a home to discuss the possibility of starting a church. The first church services were conducted at a municipal building and 16 people were present. At that time, the developer of Peachtree City was offering to give three acres of land to the first congregation to present plans and financing for a new building. Meeting all the requested regulations, a new building was constructed and the group moved in, just two years after its first meeting. In June 1990, construction was under way again and a new 350-seat auditorium was built. The congregation currently numbers 150 people. The current minister is Aubrey Johnson. He was born and reared in Nashville and is a graduate of David Lipscomb College in Nashville. He was in his junior year there when he felt the call to the field of ministry. He later received a master of arts and religion degree and is currently working on his doctorate. Serving in Tennessee, Oklahoma and Alabama, he came to Peachtree City just seven weeks ago. It was while he was at David Lipscomb that he met his wife, Lisa. She is a medical coding specialist and will be employed at PriceWaterhouse Cooper. The Lipscombs are the parents of three boys: Buddy, 20, who is a Bible major at David Lipscomb,; Matt, 19, who is at David Lipscomb as a chemical engineering major, and Will, 18, who is attending Freed-Heardman University in Tennessee. Johnson has previously taught at Faulkner University in Montgomery on the subject of biblical perspectives in business and management and is the author of a book on this subject. He would be glad to speak to civic clubs, businesses and community groups. He also is the author of a book, Music Matters In The Lord's Church. Making the church a place of encouragement is important to Johnson. This is a place where faith and family can grow together, he said, and developing a family ministry is important to me. Peachtree City Church of Christ meets each Sunday morning for Bible study at 9:30 a.m., worship service is at 10:30 a.m., and Sunday evening worship is at 6 p.m., with a Wednesday night Bible class at 7 p.m. It is at 201 S. Peachtree Parkway; phone 770-487-9246.
