The Medical Director at Benchmark is Dr. Carl Shenkman, a board-certified neurologist, certified to perform acupuncture. He is a specialist in electro-physiology.

Managing pain with electric current and acupuncture is a procedure that Dr. Shenkman has been doing for a number of years. A recent study using electrical currents and acupuncture needles similar to the procedure used by Dr. Shenkman was performed at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. The procedure is called PENS (Percutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), and the University of Texas study is available on the Internet. The research shows the procedure to be very effective for decreasing pain and improving function.

The Electro-Physiology Department at Benchmark is state of the art when it comes to treating patients with electrical current. The technology used at Benchmark is a highly sophisticated, computerized system. The current regulates and controls the frequencies, communicating electrically with the body in a manner much like the brain. Dr. Shenkman explains that when a person experiences pain, their brain will, among other things, release endorphins, which are natural pain suppressors. With the Benchmark system, the computer sends a message to the brain and tells it to release more endorphins. As a result, the patient has higher levels of natural pain-relieving substances being released into the boday.

One of the fastest growing areas in health care today is what is now being classified as "complementary medicine," or prevention of the disease.
