Qualifying up and running

All has gone as planned so far during qualifying for the upcoming City Council elections, with the possibility of one minor change.

Mayor Pro Tempore Annie McMenamin was the first to qualify, filing her candidacy early Monday morning in her bid for re-election to the city's Post 1 seat.

The first of three candidates for Post 2, Chuck Lehman, qualified later on Monday, while Bruce Perlman qualified Tuesday. Dan Tennant became an official candidate Thursday morning.

All three of the candidates for Post 2, soon to be vacated by Jim Pace, announced during the summer that they would be running.

Another candidate in the Post 1 race emerged Thursday morning. James Melvin Ewing hand-delivered a press statement to the Citizen offices just before noon, announcing that he would be running.

Ewing said that he would qualify Friday. As of noon Thursday, only the four candidates mentioned above had qualified, according to city clerk Nancy Faulkner.

Qualifying was scheduled to end Friday at 4:30 p.m.

City Council positions are numbered 1-4 for election purposes only. All posts are “at-large,” which means that each council member represents the entire city.

All seats are held for four-year terms. Council members receive a salary of $6,000 per year.

If a runoff is necessary, it will be Nov. 16. Deadline for voter registration is Oct. 4.

More complete information on the city's election and voting procedures can be found at the official Peachtree City Web site at http://www.peachtree-city.org.
