There is no better rivalry in the county than Fayette County High School versus the McIntosh Chiefs. No matter if the game is football or chess, emotions run high for both teams and the spectacle is always enjoyable for the audience.

Last Thursday saw the Tigers and Chiefs meet on the softball diamond. Both teams are having a successful season and will meet each other again a few more times before the season expires.

The game began with the Tigers getting several hits off McIntosh pitcher Brooke King in the second inning, but a double play stopped the Tiger scoring threat. In the third inning, the Tigers made two costly errors, allowing two Chiefs to reach base. Britte Hardy scored both of her teammates with a huge hit to the centerfield fence. Hardy soon crossed the plate when Abby King dug out a base hit, hit toward the Fayette shortstop.

The Tigers came up to bat and put two more runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. The scoring ceased until the sixth inning when McIntosh catcher Meghan Mulcahy hit a double and Brooke King hit a double right after her. The game ended with the Chiefs winners 4-2. The two teams will meet at Meade Field in Peachtree City at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20.

McIntosh then traveled to the Rockdale Tournament over the weekend and captured second place. Their first game was against the Stockbridge Tigers. The game went to extra innings and the Chiefs pulled out a 2-1 win, after the Stockbridge pitcher made an illegal pitch and walked home the winning run.

The second opponent for McIntosh was the Rockdale Bulldogs. Mulcahy kept up her offensive onslaught by driving in two runs in the first inning. The Chiefs put some more numbers on the board in the third inning when Hardy hit a two-run homerun. Renae Clark added to the damage by slamming a double and scoring Mulcahy. The Chiefs were once again winners, 5-3.

In the first tournament game, McIntosh faced Collins Hill. The Chiefs won 3-2 as Brooke King, Renae Clark and Alison Zelinski earned an RBI apiece. The next game pitted them against the Heritage Patriots, a tough opponent they first met this year at the Sandy Creek Shootout.

The only run came when the Patriots pitcher made an illegal pitch, bringing Moore across the plate. The win moved McIntosh into the championship game to face the Duluth Cats. McIntosh had several batters reach base but never scored, eventually leading to a 2-0 loss and a second place finish.
