Carriage Lane busy in pursuit of its goals

The Carriage Lane Presbyterian Church, Peachtree City, has been busy upholding its objectives since the mid-1980s.

Those are: Pursuing a vital worship demonstrating the presence and power of God; Pursuing the application of the word of God; Pursuing wholeness found in relationship with Christ and His church; Pursuing the application of the word of God; and Pursuing the witness of His love.

At first, the early members met in homes and were led by the Rev. Carl Wilson, who is founder and president of World Wide Discipleship Association, whose headquarters is in Fayette County. He served as part-time pastor until August 1990, when the group called its first full-time minister, the Rev. Doug Griffith, who continues to serve in that post.

He was born in Lancaster, Pa. and reared in Pennsylvania and Connecticut. He first felt the pull into ministry as a sophomore in high school, and was challenged to seek the intellectual evidences of the Bible and its message by an educator.

He is a graduate of Furman University, where he earned a degree in education. While there, he was active in the campus ministry and taught Bible study.

He next entered Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, where he earned a master's of divinity.

Though he met his wife, Cindy, in college, they did not marry until his second year in seminary. They are the parents of Katie, 14, who is a student at Landmark Christian School, Mary, 11, who attends Crossroads Christian School, and Luke, 9, who also attends Crossroads.

In the short term, Griffith would like to see the church have more mission groups overseas, as he wants to continue sharing the gospel around the world. The church currently has missions going in Peru, Mexico and several places in the United States.

He is excited about the growing youth ministry; teens comprise 25 percent of the church membership.

The church is looking forward to a building program, and expects to get into a new 750-seat sanctuary by December 2000.

Sunday School for all ages begins at 9:30 a.m. and the worship service begins at 8:15 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The church is at 101 Carriage Lane, which runs off Ga. Highway 54, and sits beside Westminster Memorial Gardens. Phone 770-631-4618.
