A Fayette County man is dead after a two-car collision during the Thursday morning rush hour. According to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, Charles Aubrey Rivers, 53, of Fayetteville was driving a 1980 Ford Courier pickup truck southbound on Ga. Highway 92 near the intersection of Lowery Road at about 7:45 a.m. when his vehicle hit a 1989 Chevrolet Corsica driven by Cathy Jones Selman, 47, also of Fayetteville. Selman apparently made a left turn off of Lowery Road and pulled into the path of the pickup, according to the Sheriff's Department report. Rivers suffered severe head and chest injuries in the crash. He was later pronounced dead at Fayette Community Hospital. Selman suffered serious injuries to her lower extremities and was flown to Atlanta Medical Center by a Phoenix Aircare helicopter. A passenger in the Corsica, 30-year-old Greg Selman of Fayetteville, was taken to Fayette Community Hospital complaining of pain. He was the only one of the three who was wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol is not suspected in the crash, but blood samples will be sent to the state crime lab for analysis, as is standard procedure in fatality wrecks. Charges are pending. Highway 92 had to be closed for about two hours while the accident was investigated. This is the fifth traffic fatality in unincorporated Fayette County in 1999.
