Renovation project earns top award

A bathroom renovation project by Atlanta-based SawHorse Inc. received top recognition in a cover story in the July/August 1999 edition of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine.

In the article, entitled “The New Bath,” SawHorse and the firm's architectural designer, Sabrina Foulke, were recognized for the 1999 Bath of the Year ($20,000-$30,000 price range).

The article pointed out that the project was in a house that had an extremely small bath for the master bedroom. The owners had already transformed an adjoining bedroom into a large walk-in closet and dressing area, which meant that the bathroom was needed only for “more utilitarian functions.”

Noting that SawHorse designer Foulke worked with the homeowners to create a “sleek and useful” new master bath within the existing space, the article reported that she decided to remove the existing tub/shower, old tiles and black-and-white wallpaper and, in effect, start over.

“Foulke chose 12 x 12-inch ceramic tile for the floor and the wall behind the shower; mirror wraps around the other three walls to give the illusion of a larger space,” the article revealed.

She designed the floor to complement carpet with a similar pattern in the dressing room.... When she and her clients chose the granite for the counter, it looked so good with the tile that Foulke decided to use it for accent squares in the floor as well.” Because the owners didn't need a bathtub, the shower was eliminated. There wasn't room for a door on the shower, so a cut-glass wall was utilized, providing high-impact interest as well as a water barrier.

The magazine also noted that Foulke made the most of a tight space by designing a counter that extends into the shower and which doubles as a shelf for bathing necessities.

“Its curve slows from the shape of the vessel sink and is repeated in small, curved corner shelves in the shower,” the article said.

The award for the bath project, which was in a house in Garden Hills, continues a continuous run of award-winning projects by the 20-year-old firm.

With the first awards coming in 1984, SawHorse has received the coveted CotY (Contractor of the Year) awards from the National Association of Remodeling Industry, including 1998 National and Regional CotY awards; Remodeling magazine's Renaissance Grand Awards; Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence, presented by Lowe's Companies and Professional Remodeler magazine at the Southern Building Show, for three consecutive years; and countless design category awards.

Owned by Jerome Quinn and Carl Seville, the professional build/design residential remodeling and renovation firm was ranked number one in the Atlanta Business Chronicle's most recent listing of “Atlanta's Top 10 Residential Remodeling Contractors,” based on 1998 remodeling revenues in Atlanta.
