McIntosh graphics
arts students win nationally The McIntosh
High School Graphic Arts Department has placed in
national competition with ten pieces of student
work produced during the 98-99 school
year.
The Gutenberg Awards, sponsored by the
International Graphic Arts Education Association
and the International Association of Printing
House Craftsmen, recognize outstanding printing
submitted by graphic arts students from high
schools, technical schools and colleges across
the country.
Michael Fessler placed first in Electronic
Pre-Press, Single Color, One-Hour Class, with a
layout he did for the schools literary
magazine. Fessler used Adobe PageMaker to
assemble the 64 pages of the book, and also made
desktop plates of the job which were used to
print the book on an offset press.
Fessler, who will receive a package of software
from Adobe for placing first in this category,
graduated in June after completing two years of
graphic arts.
In the area of Multicolor Offset Printing,
One-Hour Class, MHS students placed first, second
and third. First place went to Heidi Hysell,
senior, who designed and printed her own
graduation invitation in gold and black ink.
Hysell used a thick, white, deckle-edged paper to
show off her design. This was her first year in
graphics.
Second place in the same category went to Mandy
Musil, who designed and printed a personal
letterhead with tight register. She graduated
last year with 2.5 years of graphic arts.
Matt Dunn won the third place award for an
illustration he drew by hand, turned into a
two-color job on the computer, and ran on the
press. Dunn graduated in June with three years of
graphic arts. All projects were printed on AB
Dick offset presses.
Two awards were won in the category of Screen
Printing, Two-hour or Longer class. Joey
Sutherland and Ronnie Melton placed third for a
t-shirt design they created and printed in four
colors with very tight register. Melton graduated
last year with seven semesters of graphic arts
and Sutherland with six. Placing fifth in the
same category was a t-shirt designed and printed
by Spencer Wadsworth, a junior this year and
currently in his seventh semester of graphics.
In other one-hour class categories the team of
Colleen Curasi and Laura Christie placed fourth
with a single-color design. The two girls, now
seniors and in their third year of graphics,
designed and printed a Christmas card with gold
ink on burgundy paper which was accompanied by a
matching envelope printed in burgundy ink.
In Electronic Pre-press, Multicolor, Matt Dunn
placed fourth with a pin design for Georgia
Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. The
design had earlier placed first in state VICA
competition and will be the design for the
official pin for the organization for the year
2000.
In other two-hour and greater categories, Joe
OHara placed fourth in Electronic
Pre-press, Single Color. He designed a calendar
which the Graphic Arts Department printed and
distributed to teachers. Kristin Knoeck earned a
fifth place in Single Color Offset Printing for
producing last years prom invitations,
which were printed in silver ink.
Other students whose work was selected for entry
and who earned a Certificate of Merit were
Theresa Childs with two multicolor press pieces,
Erin Smith with a multicolor electronic imaging
design, and Ryan MacCallum with a process color
piece. The MHS Graphics Department teaches skills
of the printing industry including layout and
design, desktop publishing, offset printing,
screen printing and photography, and gives high
school students the chance to explore careers in
the printing industry and develop some marketable
skills while still in high school.
Margo Booth is the instructor.
