Council to decide fate of 53-home, 20 acre Apple Orchad proposal

Plans for a 53-home subdivision on 20 acres just south of downtown Fayetteville will sink or swim Tuesday.

Fayetteville City Council will vote on zoning for Charles and Mary Alice Odom's proposed Apple Orchard subdivision at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The site of the proposed development is the southeast corner of Grady Avenue and Beauregard Boulevard.

Council meetings usually are conducted on Mondays, but this week's meeting has been moved to Tuesday because of Labor Day.

Last Wednesday, Dan Odom, son of the petitioners, and Becky Morris of Integrated Science and Engineers spread plans for the subdivision on the hood of a black Chevrolet pickup truck and scratched out revisions following a work session in which council members expressed new objections to the subdivision plan.

The Odoms proposed 100 homes for the neighborhood last year, and withdrew the petition after Planning Commission and council members objected to the density. The new plan has faced similar objections, and the family has made revisions prior to each meeting of commission and council.

City staff has recommended that approval of the subdivision be conditioned on reducing the number of lots still further, to 50, and having two entrances on Beauregard, one across from Medford Drive and one across from Bates Avenue.

Also on the agenda Tuesday, council will consider Jeff Landrum's request for office and institutional zoning for .67 acres on Ga. Highway 54 east of town.
