Brooks United Methodist Church plans Heritage Sunday Sept. 12 – 1800s style

Forget the phone, the computer, the Internet and TV—for just one day. Take a trip back in time when a “batch' was not a computer file; when “booting up” was what you did to go outside; when “horsepower” was just one; when fellowship was the main form of entertainment. How? Come to Heritage Sunday at Brooks United Methodist Church Sunday, Sept. 12.

Members are going all out to celebrate life in the 1800s starting with Sunday School and church in the morning and ending with an old fashioned square dance that evening.

Morning worship will be in the old traditional style, including Holy Communion, and will feature a “guest” preacher—the Rev. John Wesley himself. Some members are planning to dress in period styles—prairie skirts, overalls, and brown derbies.

After church, there will be an outdoor barbecue under old fashioned tents pitched the day before. Desserts will be prepared by church members.

For entertainment, the Orangemen, a UMC bluegrass gospel band will perform. There will be an old fashioned cake walk, a pie tasting, a jail and bail, and old fashioned games such as those played in the 1800s.

The day will conclude with a square dance on the grounds.

T-shirts commemorating the event also will be on sale.

Brooks United Methodist Church is at 119 Morgan Mill Rd. in Brooks. For more information, call 770-719-7593.
