Theatrical group going strong in Fayetteville

Fayette Community Theater, Inc. is the county's oldest and largest theater company, offering classic children's productions, musicals, off-Broadway, one and two-act comedies, and Christmas productions.

Acting classes are also available through the theater group. Currently they produce up to four full-scale productions each year. Auditions are open to the public for all shows and are announced in the local newspapers. Flyers regarding auditions and upcoming plays can usually be found at Fayette County libraries.

The FCT is a nonprofit organization, supported through donations from sponsors, ad sales in theater programs, ticket sales, concession stand sales and souvenir sales. The Endowment Committee for the Cultural Arts (ECCA) also underwrites the organization.

Some recent FCT productions have included “Voices from the Titanic,” “Cinderella,” “Tom Sawyer,” “A Christmas Carol” and “Pocahontas.” They are hoping to produce their first Broadway musical, “The Music Man,” in the year 2000. All FCT productions are suitable for the entire family.

FCT utilizes the Sams Auditorium and local school auditoriums for their productions. According to Sylvia Wade, chairman of the FCT, “We always have a lot of participation from seniors, not just as an audience.”

Many volunteers donate time to put the presentations together. Costumes and sets must be designed and made. Ads must be sold for the programs. Volunteers work as ushers and help at the concession stands. Plays must be chosen, auditions held and actors directed. Musicians are needed. Someone must work the lights. There are numerous opportunities for seniors who would like to help in a wide variety of areas.
