Who gave the right to judge ethics of boosters selling beer?

I also read the article entitled, “Boosters + Beer = Big Bucks,” as well as the response from Dr. [Knox] Herndon [The Sunday Citizen, Aug. 29]. I feel that there are a few things that need to be said.

First, I would like to know who gave “the concerned parent” and Dr. Herndon the right to judge my ethics and morals? I don't know about their churches, but my church teaches me not to judge other people, only to love them.

It is the job of the parents to teach their children the difference between right and wrong. There are many things in today's society that adults do that are not appropriate for children. Does that mean all adults should abstain? Certainly not!

The booths at the amphitheater are manned only by adults and sell only to adults. Lakewood looks at this as an opportunity to put money back into our community that can be used for good. The argument can also be made that the lottery money should not be used in the name of our children, either, but our children would be grossly behind without the use of the facilities, computers, scholarships and other learning tools that are acquired with “tainted money.” I am all for things that help our children better themselves, as they are the key to our future.

I would be interested to know how many lemonade sales, car washes, bake sales, and other fund-raising activities that this “concerned parent” has participated in.

I do guarantee you that this person will be first in line to claim their child's new cleats, uniforms, and other amenities that are bought with this money. I agree with [Robert] McCloud from Sandy Creek [Booster Club]. These “concerned parents” should step up and promote other types of fund-raising activities, but then I'm sure something would be found wrong with those, too. It is a sad fact in our society that everyone wants everything for nothing!

Finally, I take offense at this newspaper's inference that Fayette County High School uses other means of fund-raising. As one of the “evil” people that sells beer at Lakewood, I can attest to the fact that Fayette County band has one of the largest stands in the amphitheater. You really should check your facts.

However, if this fund-raising had helped get these kids to the Sydney Olympics, for a once in a lifetime opportunity, I would have helped by selling beer for them.
