Jamborees in store for Cheifs/Indians

Some county football teams got their proverbial feet wet last week, playing at the Fayette County High School Jamboree. This week, the McIntosh Chiefs and the East Coweta Indians get their chance on the preseason gridiron.

McIntosh plays at Landmark Christian at 7 p.m. on Saturday. They will face the Wa Eagles and the Morrow Mustangs. The Chiefs come off a disappointing 2-8 season last year, with many of their bright spots graduated. The offense needs to find some new weapons as they will be missing Dion Stokes' speed and athleticism, as well as a solid reciever in Matthew Dunn.

The defense played solidly last year, holding LaGrange to their lowest rushing total of the season. With a number of starters returning to the defense, the Chiefs may find themselves causing some turnovers and scoring some much needed points.

The Chiefs will open the season at Pebblebrook, their first opponents of the year from last year. The Chiefs should match up fairly well with the Falcons, who have also lost some size to graduation.

East Coweta looks to their jamboree at South Cobb High School with a little trepidation. The team is quite banged up at the moment and the lineup this Friday is not what their lineup will look like in the next few weeks. Their quarterback, Reemer Argot, will be out another few weeks with a hamstring injury, and tailback DeMarcus Barner will be out at least another week with a banged up ankle and knee.

“Our defense is our strength,” said Coach Danny Cronic. “We're probably more physical and aggressive than we have been in the past.” Their defense will have to be outstanding, the explosive juggernauts that the Indians had last year have graduated. Only one player for East Coweta will be starting in the same position he started in last year.

Momentum will be a deciding factor for the Indians. They face two top teams in the first two weeks in Parkview and Lovejoy. If they can get a win and build some momentum, they might be O.K. when they travel to face their crosstown rivals in Newnan. “Winning breeds winning,” said Cronic. “This season will come down to how we grow and progress. We're preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.”
