Tyrone survey on the way

By JOHN THOMPSON

By the end of the year, Tyrone's citizens will have spoken on how they want their town developed.

When Tyrone residents check their mail later this week, they'll discover a 64-question survey developed by the Citizens' Action Committee and the town's staff.

Town manager Barry Amos said the purpose of the survey is to give the town leaders a better perspective on how the residents see their town and how they would like to see it developed.

The survey is broken down into several areas including population, economic development, community facilities and services, natural and historic resources, housing and land use.

Some of the statements that residents have to indicate how strongly they feel from strongly agree to strongly disagree include:

• Population growth is acceptable provided open space is preserved.

• Commuter rail would be desirable for residents and the town's future.

• A system of greenways should be developed that protects the town's environment and provides nature trails.

• Tyrone should build a bunch of low income apartments.

• I would like to see a major grocery store in Tyrone.

Four of the questions are about the town's flirtation with a sewer system and one question asks if the residents would be in favor of a one cent sales tax for a limited time to fund development of sewer services.

The survey also asks what type of recreational services residents would like to see developed. The options range from soccer fields and bicycle trail to a seniors activity center.

The survey is due back to the town's staff by Sept. 20 and residents can drop the survey off at several locations around town.
