The county's newest school should open for classes by the end of October. According to Coweta County School system operations director Dr. Doug Bennett, the system is waiting for the contractor to finish their portion of the school, before school system employees start placing desks an chalkboards at Smokey Road Middle School. We should not have a problem getting in by the end of October. We probably could get in by the first of the month, but I want to make sure everything's perfect, Bennett said. Until the school opens, 503 students slated to attend the school are taking their classes at Central Middle School. So far, there have been no problems with having the students at what will be the county's new technical school next year. Attendance at the other middle schools has been consistent, with the largest attendance at Evans with 895 students. There were about 90 students who were grandfathered into that attendance zone when we drew up the lines for Smokey Road Middle, Bennett said. Students are still trickling into all the county's schools and Bennett won't have a final attendance figure until after Labor Day.
