Movies Opening Friday Teaching Mrs. Tingle A revenge comedy written and directed by Kevin Williamson, the man who brings you Dawson's Creek week after week. This film is allegedly less like Scream and more like Heathers. Too bad. Rated PG-13. Mickey Blue Eyes Hugh Grant plays the charming Brit who is marrying into the mob. He'll smile lots and make the women swoon. Rated PG-13. Universal Soldier 2 Jean Claude Van Damme battles a new breed of Universal Soldiers (including the WCW's Goldberg). Gee, I wonder if he'll win? Rated R. Pick of the Week Bowfinger A soon to be classic. Steve Martin plays a terrible director (think Ed Wood) who makes his crew's Hollywood dreams come true. The laughs keep coming and Eddie Murphy is brilliant in a dual role. Rated PG-13. Now Playing American Pie I wonder if my past encounters would be that funny on the screen. It would certainly be a longer movie. Rated R. The Blair Witch Project An innovative horror film that packs quite a punch. Rated R. Brokedown Palace Two girls get arrested in the Orient when drugs are found on them. It was planted there and it's up to Bill Pullman to try and get them out. Rated R. Deep Blue Sea Think Jurassic Shark. A cure for Alzheimer's lies with sharks, but these sharks have had their intelligence enhanced and a smart shark is a dangerous one. Rated PG-13. Detroit Rock City Last week I called this movie Rock N Roll All Night by accident. I wonder if it even matters.Rated R. Dick A comedy about two girls who get involved with the Nixon White House during the Watergate Scandal. Twenty years from now it will be Bill, except it will be rated NC-17. Rated PG-13. The General's Daughter John Travolta plays an investigator looking into the murder of ...the general's daughter. Lots of suspense and drama, just try to not think, Barbarino. Rated R. The Haunting This remake boasts new effects and a talented cast, but it is boring with tons of gaps. It is heavy with lameness. Rated PG-13. Inspector Gadget One of America's favorite cartoon detectives gets a live action movie. Matthew Broderick stars as the bumblingly brilliant Gadget. Rated PG. The Iron Giant Classic looking cartoon about a young boy and a giant friend from outer space. It looks very good. Rated G. Mystery Men Here's the review from my friend Kurt When it's funny, it's real funny, but when it's dull, it's real dull. Not all bad, but not all that. Rated PG-13. The Sixth Sense This is an incredible movie with one of the best endings in recent history. It is well acted, masterfully directed and ultra creepy without being ultra-blatant. Rated PG-13. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace So, it's not the second coming. This is a great movie with effects that mess with your mind long after. It is a perfect beginning to the story and the performances are great. Rated PG. Tarzan Disney didn't make a lot of noise about this movie, but it makes as big a splash as the best of them. It has a good story, nice songs, and incredible visuals. Rated G. The Thomas Crown Affair Brosnan takes a break from being Bond by being a burglar (a really good burglar). This is a remake and it is getting good reviews. Rated R. Wild, Wild West A critical flop, this underachieving film was a hit with the masses, at least for one week. Rated PG-13. The Wood A comedy/drama about four young men growing up in The Wood. I haven't heard much either way. Rated R. Also Playing Austin Powers 2 I found this to be funnier than the original. Mike Myers is at home playing wacky characters and the Austin Powers series is like the 90's version of The Pink Panther. Rated PG-13. Entrapment Sean Connery is a burglar and Catherine Zeta Jones is a cop. What do you think will happen? Rated PG-13. Life Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence are wrongly imprisoned for Life. It's surprising how funny prison can be. Rated R. The Matrix Wow. A visually appealing action/ sci-fi movie. If you haven't seen it, go. Now. Rated R. The Mummy A fun action adventure starring Brendan Fraser. The effects are nice and there are a few jumpy type suspenseful moments. Rated PG-13. Muppets From Space I can't help but feel that the world has let the Muppets down. They are as cute and funny as ever, yet hardly anyone watches their movies or television shows anymore. For shame. Rated PG. Never Been Kissed Drew Barrymore stars as a cub reporter who goes undercover in high school. David Arquette also stars. Rated PG-13. Notting Hill A world famous actress runs into a small bookstore in Notting Hill (get it?) and she meets a charming young man and falls in love. Rated PG-13. October Sky This film has received rave reviews from everybody I know. It is said to be very inspirational. Rated PG. 10 Things I Hate About You A cute movie loosely based on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. You'll want to fall in love all over again. Rated PG-13. |
