School board gets update on construction

The Fayette County Board of Education was updated on about 30 ongoing school construction projects Monday night during a sparsely attended regular meeting.

Mike Satterfield, projects director for the school system, reported that site grading for the Starr's Mill High School stadium is about 95 percent complete. He asked the board to approve a change order, adding $30,000 to the overall cost of the $2.1 million stadium, for irrigation and sod. He explained that the job could not be done any cheaper.

Although, this was the first addition to the contract, superintendent Dr. John DeCotis assured the board that future deductions anticipated in the project would balance it out. Timely installation of the sod should provide a grassy soccer field for spring, Satterfield noted.

The concrete slab foundations have been poured for the Flat Rock Middle School auditorium and the steel frame structure is completed. Masonry work has begun. At North Fayette Elementary, kitchen demolition has begun in preparation for a new kitchen facility.

Progress on special projects include:

Grading work complete at the McIntosh High School fields with an irrigation system and sod installed

Fencing has been installed and an infield has been dug at Starr's Mill High School's softball field. Dug-outs are under construction.

Grading has been completed at the Starr's Mill High School practice field with installation of an irrigation system 95 percent complete. The field is being prepared for sod.

Rough grading and installation of fencing has begun on the Starr's Mill High School baseball field.

The retainer wall has been installed and ground leveled for landscaping at the Rising Starr game field.

Work is 75 percent complete on reroofing of building A at the Lafayette Educational Center.
